Paul Foot at Just the Tonic 11/11/12

This piece originally appeared in The Demon newspaper. Wow, it's an unpleasant read. I clearly hadn't mastered commas yet.

On the eleventh of November I went to see Paul Foot’s “Kenny Larch Is Dead!” at Just the Tonic Leicester. Foot’s bizarre comedy has often been described as an acquired taste, reflected by the fact that his fans are referred to as “Comedy Connoisseurs”. This is a fair comment, he may not be everyone’s cup of tea but to those open minded enough to accept his highly alternative humour his show is a beautifully off the wall blend of surprise, surrealism and hilarity.

Foot entered with a strange bombast, a fanfare sounded and our eccentric host walked on stage dressed like a cross between a colour blind yuppie and David Bowie to present us with a show which seems to have been written by Salvador Dali and Julian Barrett. His thoroughly believable character dragged the audience into a baffling alien world as if he was the White Rabbit of comedy. He then took us on a journey, first wandering between various delightfully surreal scenarios and then finally descending into the unadulterated joy of utter nonsense. It is pure escapism, there is no agenda, no hidden meaning, it’s the just the immense humour of the unexpected, the out of the ordinary and the nonsensical.

Before Paul came on the audience were treated to the admin of his support act, character comedian Malcolm Head. Malcolm is the assistant archivist at Kent Police Museum, Chatham, and part- time poet. Which hardly sounds like a recipe for comedy, but I can assure you that it is. As he informed us of his heckling policy and proceeded to deal with the oddly intellectual heckles with the help of his efficient heckle filing system the audience were amused by his socially inept still-lives-with-his-mother character. As a support act he compliments Foot’s humour but is also different enough that he doesn’t seem to be imitating the headliner in any way.

Just the Tonic is a comedy club in the city centre. It’s large enough for a substantial audience but also small enough to remain the intimacy essential to Foot’s set. To get tickets visit http://www.justthetonic.com/leicester-comedy/ . Upcoming shows include Josie Long and Daniel Sloss.
